Mello Charm2 - Commission by snoday Mello Charm2 - Commission by snoday
It's Mello from Death Note. It took me a couple tries to get it right. For a commission, I was trying to recreate this: [link]

His hair's not quite as accurate. (I haven't sculpted in a while.) I turned his head to try to make it look more like he's hugging the chocolate. He's a little smaller than the other one too. (I realized after the fact that the bottle has a tiny crack in it, but it shouldn't be a problem really....)

I didn't take pics of this process, but I've been thinking about it, so is anyone interested in a tutorial on how I make these?

---
Made with: Rubber sculpey, tiny glass bottle, a needle

(Yea, my hands are pretty torn up....)

Oh, he's small enough to slip right into the bottle. That part was no problem.

Oh wow! It's soo tiny, I've tried to make things with clay that tiny I accitently squished them. How did you do it? He's just so cute.

Believe me, I've squished a lot of 'em. (Sometimes on purpose out of frustration.) It takes practice, skill, and a lot of patience.

One thing I've learned is that you don't want to hold it after you've got it how you want it.

I'll be making a tut, but in the mean time, some tips:

First I roll out the body and head to make sure they're the right size. I put down the legs, and set the body on top. Then arms or objects, depending on what they're doing. (You can't put the head on and hold the body while you do the eyes and hair. It doesn't work and that's when you're most likely to squish it.) I put the head on a skin-colored chunk of clay that I'm not using, 'cus you can squish that all you want. THEN, When the hair's almost done, (everything but the top, 'cus you have to push down to attach the head), that's when you transplant it and finish the hair.

I've dropped a lot of body parts on the floor before, never to be seen again, so you may want to sit. (I can't, 'cus if I sit my daughter climbs up on the desk and grabs everything.) Also, when you're doing the final hairs on top, (or any of the hair for that matter), try your best not to knock the head off of the body/chunk of clay.

Ahh, there's so much more I want to say, but it'll have to wait for the tut. I hope this helps so you can practice a little.

I'll try to set up a tutorial with my next commission, which it looks like it'll be L in the bathtub, not Mello in a bottle. The principle's the same though. I'm not sure how long it'll take me, 'cus I'd like to actually have time to celebrate my birthday. ;/

I warn you though, it takes some skill, some practice, and a lot of patience. (Like I said, this charm took me a couple tries to get right. The first one came out like a retarded chibi. Sometimes you can fix it, but other times, you really just have to scrap it and start over.)

I get a lot of questions on that. (We don't have a lot of things in our town, but we have lots of arts & crafts stores.) I get them at my local Hobby Lobby. The website has a store locator, but you can't buy things from the website. If there's not a store close by, you *might* be able to find your closest Hobby Lobby and call to see if you can pay to have them ship it to your house, but I don't know if they'd be willing.

Omg. :omfg: That is so damn small. :faint:

And I agree with TerrorEffect though I think the 'strandyness' of the hair makes it looks more delicate which is nice. Also, does it just fall about in the bottle? Because I'd be totally terrified of breaking it. D:

Yea, it sits loose in the bottle. But it's made of rubber Sculpey, so unless you're abusing it, it's not *too* likely to break.
